A pompous intellect said to me today: “You always emphasize that we should memorize the * I8 T+ {% Q9 Y* u% W7 m0 Q7 H
sutras and shastras. Yet I think a Dharma practitioner’s main concerns should be cultivating 7 P1 T/ M% y) h* `- L
bodhichitta, overcoming confused emotions, as well as practicing concentration and meditation.
2 I) x; g) |: ZAs to the theoretical aspects, a rough understanding should suffice. Why waste time memorizing 2 u$ h; A2 e* F' c& M( b/ R9 q" O
them line by line?” He had some points there. But I knew the time he so “saved” had not been
# B5 H( L" B! Fused properly on the crucial tasks he mentioned, but rather on worthless activities such as
0 R) a0 t* \' [1 _" idistractions, gossiping, and slumber. I replied: “What you said makes sense. I would rejoice for 7 q i" P, ]" K9 E; ~; Q
sure if you were to really use your time in cultivating bodhichitta or sitting in meditation. But is it 5 ~8 \. @6 \! _- O, g/ o
because you are sitting in meditation all day long that you have no time for recitation and 8 d/ Z: ^1 S" m- v) X d0 b
memorization? Not quite so, correct?” Hearing this, he seemed to see the light at once and said:
* l9 r5 a+ X& Y9 g% a“I understand now. I am just a big talker; in fact, I have not devoted my time to practice. From
4 V& k) r, v- P" p# v4 O) [now on I will save time from distractions to memorize stanzas for at least 30 minutes.” Hearing 6 e' d% d( C8 T3 r! B
his confession, I was quite pleased. This case applies not only to him, but also to all practitioners;
4 H: V* _+ w4 ~+ ~0 T& b) dit is definitely beneficial to find time every day, even if it’s only 10 minutes, to memorize one
' S. B" \$ s/ F$ s* Z1 r& E* nstanza or note down a koan. }# Q2 t1 q7 g' h
鲁迅先生也说:“我不是什么天才,只不过是把别人喝咖啡的时间用来看书和写作了而已" b1 T, @ n/ t% ]' A: _8 o
。”世间的名人懂得对光阴的珍惜,却不知道用于修行;修行的人懂得修行,却往往不知道( K1 D% v4 |) Q7 `: }% y6 V8 K

not to use it on spiritual growth; spiritual seekers know Dharma practices but usually do not
' o% A; D! O1 b1 A# {既然我们无法使时光倒流,如何使人生过得完美,不致临死之时为虚度年华而悔恨,就应
" s# x- `' |7 R8 _当如海绵挤水一样挤出每一分、每一秒,做有意义的事,而不应散乱度日。
* q* g; u+ A( {1 M) Y5 n, ^So long as we are unable to turn time backward, we should try to live our lives perfectly.
, Q6 v/ Z+ e: E0 _" z; AOtherwise on our deathbed we will be overcome with remorse for having wasted our precious 1 ]# _- H. L- R+ e5 b; b
time. Let us make use of every minute, every second, like squeezing out water from a wet
1 N" z/ v0 y: h5 ~8 a; I0 q, P7 ksponge, on meaningful activities; let us not squander our time on distractions.
